Formal Logic: A Crash Course for Adults

Formal Logic: A Crash Course for Adults

from $75.00

This 10-week "crash" course will move about 3x the speed of the student course and is designed to minimize participants' time commitment (2 hrs/week including lecture and practice assignments).

Therefore, the course is not intended to provide thorough knowledge of the subject, but it offers a basic understanding of key topics and development of skills in formal logic.

The 10-week course runs the week of June 6 through the week of August 15, with no class the week of July 4.

Formal logic does not usually pair well with wine or beer. But it's an ungraded class on summer evenings, so put the kids to bed and enjoy.

Reasons to take the course:

  • It will help a mentor better teach the Aquinas Learning Formal Logic or Great Arguments courses. (Note: it will still be necessary for the mentor to read and prepare for each class, which goes a bit further.)

  • It will help a parent work alongside a student in the Aquinas Learning Formal Logic or Great Arguments course.

  • It will help any parent incorporate skills of logical thinking into home education.

  • Hang out with the cool crowd.

The course will follow the same track as the Aquinas Learning Formal Logic course. The textbook, The Discovery of Deduction by Classical Academic Press, is NOT required for participants in the crash course. However, there will be recommended reading from the textbook each week, for those who wish to devote more time to thoroughly understand formal logic.

Most weeks we will have an in-person, one-hour class via Zoom on Monday evening. Handouts will help summarize the material covered in the lectures. Following each class, participants will be assigned practice exercises that should require no more than an hour to complete and submit for review by Thursday evening.

Three weeks there will be no class, but only a test to be taken at home and submitted for review by Thursday evening. The intention of the tests is to practice what we have learned and to evaluate the participant's knowledge and understanding, not for any final grade.
